Overview

Naitasiri is one of Fiji's provinces on the island of Viti Levu, and forms part of the Central Division. It covers about 1,666 square kilometres and had a population of roughly 178,000 at the 2017 census. The province includes lowland suburban zones that are contiguous with the Suva metropolitan area as well as extensive upland and forested terrain inland.

Geography and environment

Naitasiri spans coastal plains, river valleys and interior mountain ranges. The Medrausucu ranges and other highlands shape the province’s drainage and climate, producing areas of higher rainfall and forest cover. Rivers that originate in these uplands feed downstream agricultural land and supply communities. The province’s position on Viti Levu gives it both accessible lowland transport links and rugged interior landscapes of ecological value.

Administration and population

The province is governed under Fiji’s system of provincial councils and customary leadership; traditional chiefs and the provincial office both play roles in local affairs. The largest urban centre in Naitasiri is the town of Nasinu, a significant suburban settlement near the capital region. Naitasiri’s population includes many iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) communities living in villages as well as residents of peri‑urban neighbourhoods.

Economy and land use

Economic activity in Naitasiri mixes subsistence and commercial agriculture with services linked to the nearby capital. Common livelihoods include cultivation of root crops and other tropical staples, smallholder cash‑crop production, livestock rearing and wage employment in urban areas. Remittances and informal trade also contribute to household incomes. Transport routes connect lowland markets with interior villages.

History, culture and notable facts

Naitasiri, like other Fijian provinces, has a strong tradition of customary land tenure and chiefly systems that influence social organization. Villages maintain local festivals, church life and cultural ceremonies important to social cohesion.
