Myomorpha is the rodent suborder that contains mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, lemmings and voles — a diverse, globally widespread group defined chiefly by jaw and tooth anatomy.

Myomorpha is a major suborder of rodents commonly called the "mouse‑like" rodents. It contains roughly 1,100–1,200 species, making it one of the largest subdivisions of mammals and accounting for a substantial fraction of living mammal diversity. Familiar animals such as house mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, lemmings and voles belong to this group. Many myomorphs are small to medium sized, are good gnawers and chewers, and play important roles in terrestrial ecosystems as seed consumers, prey species and ecosystem engineers.

Myomorphs are defined primarily by the arrangement of their jaw musculature and by characteristic patterns in the cheek teeth. The masseter muscles are positioned and channeled in a way often called the "myomorphous" zygomasseteric structure — this improves biting efficiency and is linked to their success as gnawing animals. Like other rodents they have a single pair of continuously growing incisors in each jaw, but the shape and occlusal patterns of molars vary among lineages and reflect diets ranging from seeds and grains to green vegetation and invertebrates.
Distribution, habitats and ecology
Myomorphs are virtually cosmopolitan on land, occurring on every continent except Antarctica and occupying many habitat types: deserts (gerbils and jerboas), grasslands and tundra (lemmings and voles), forests and agricultural landscapes (mice and rats), and subterranean niches (some spalacids). Many species are nocturnal or crepuscular and are primarily granivorous or omnivorous, though dietary breadth is large across the suborder. Their high reproductive rates and flexibility make them important prey for many predators and influential agents in seed dispersal and soil turnover.
Evolution and fossil record
The myomorph radiation is well represented in the fossil record, with significant diversification apparent by the Oligocene and a major adaptive expansion during the Miocene. Most modern groups trace their diversification to continental radiations in Eurasia and Africa, followed by dispersal into other regions. The superfamily Muroidea in particular underwent extensive speciation and now contains the majority of myomorph species.
Human interactions and significance
Members of Myomorpha have a complex relationship with humans. Some species are model organisms in biomedical research (notably laboratory mice and rats), others are kept as pets (hamsters, gerbils), while many are agricultural pests or vectors of zoonotic disease. Their ubiquity in human environments has made them culturally and economically significant, prompting extensive study in ecology, pest management and conservation biology.
Classification and notable families
The suborder is commonly divided into two superfamilies. The superfamily Muroidea contains most species and includes several important families: Platacanthomyidae (spiny dormouse relatives), Spalacidae (blind mole‑rats and bamboo rats), Calomyscidae (mouse‑like hamsters), Nesomyidae (diverse African rodents), Cricetidae (hamsters, voles and New World mice and rats) and Muridae (Old World mice and rats). The other principal superfamily, Dipodoidea, includes the jumping rodents such as jerboas and jumping mice (family Dipodidae). These families show the morphological and ecological breadth that has helped myomorphs become one of the most successful groups of mammals.
