Geography and natural features

Matagorda County includes shoreline, estuarine waters and barrier island environments that form part of the Texas Gulf Coast. Matagorda Bay and adjacent marshes are dominant features; the Colorado River of Texas flows through parts of the county and empties into the bay system. These wetlands support fisheries, waterfowl and other wildlife, and the coastal plain has sandy beaches, tidal flats and oyster reefs.

History and name

The area was settled during the 19th century as Anglo-American and European migration expanded across coastal Texas. The county’s Spanish-derived name, commonly rendered from "mata gorda," reflects early Spanish and Mexican influence in the region and has been retained since the county’s formation in the 1800s. Towns grew around ports, rivers and agricultural land uses.

Economy and land use

Matagorda County’s economy combines agriculture, fisheries, energy and tourism. Commercial and recreational fishing, shrimping and oyster harvesting are important along the bay and coast. Inland acreage is used for cattle, rice and other crops. Energy activities—oil and gas production and related industry—are also part of the local economy.
