Geography and environment

The province stretches from the Hicacos Peninsula on the north—home to the long beaches of Varadero—down through fertile plains to the extensive Ciénaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp) on the southern coast. That southern wetland is one of the largest in the Caribbean and supports diverse birdlife, mangroves and coastal ecosystems. The region also contains river valleys and limestone terrain that shape local agriculture and settlements.

History and culture

Matanzas has a colonial past and developed as a center for sugar production and trade. The provincial capital earned nicknames reflecting its cultural life, and the area is credited with key developments in Cuban music and dance. Afro‑Cuban traditions, percussion-based genres and the danzón have deep roots here. The Bay of Pigs (Playa Girón) on the southern shore is a notable historical site from the 20th century.

Economy and tourism

Tourism is a leading economic activity because of Varadero, one of the island’s best-known resort zones, which attracts international visitors for its beaches and hotels. Agriculture—particularly sugarcane historically—fishing and salt production remain important in rural districts. Parts of the province are managed for conservation and ecotourism, with guided visits to wetlands, birding and small-scale nature excursions.
