Manganese(VII) oxide, commonly called manganese heptoxide and written Mn2O7, is the neutral oxide associated with the +7 oxidation state of manganese. Unlike common permanganate salts, Mn2O7 is a covalent, molecular oxide rather than an ionic anion. In small amounts it can be prepared in the laboratory and is notable for its strong oxidizing properties and its instability: it is a volatile, oily liquid at room temperature that can detonate under mechanical shock or on contact with organic materials.

Structurally the molecule is often described as two MnO4 tetrahedra linked by an oxygen bridge (formally O3Mn–O–MnO3). Each manganese center is in formal oxidation state +7 and therefore has a d0 electronic configuration. The compound is usually observed as a dark green to deep red oily liquid, depending on sample purity and lighting. It is a potent oxidizer and reacts violently with reducing agents and many organic compounds. Mn2O7 hydrolyzes in the presence of water to produce permanganic acid and related species, meaning it cannot coexist stably with free water.
Preparation and typical reactions
In the laboratory Mn2O7 is produced by treating permanganate salts (for example potassium permanganate) with very concentrated sulfuric acid. The acid dehydrates the permanganate anion to give the molecular oxide, which separates as an oily phase. Mn2O7 decomposes exothermically: typical decomposition products include manganese dioxide (MnO2) and oxygen; the release of nascent oxygen and other reactive oxygen species such as ozone has been reported when decomposition is vigorous. Because of its oxidizing power, Mn2O7 will oxidize alcohols, hydrocarbons and many other organic materials, often explosively.

Mn2O7 is regarded as highly hazardous. It is shock- and friction-sensitive and may detonate if struck, rapidly warmed, or mixed with organics. It should be prepared only in very small quantities, behind blast protection, with remote handling and at low temperature. Contact with combustible material, paper, solvents or reducing agents can initiate violent decomposition. Waste and residues should be quenched and neutralized carefully; because of the risk of violent reactions, disposal of concentrated residues is not suitable for routine chemical waste streams.
Significance and distinctions
Manganese(VII) oxide is of interest primarily as a chemical curiosity and as an illustration of the extreme oxidizing character of manganese in its highest common oxidation state. It is the molecular anhydride of permanganic acid and one of the few neutral oxides in which manganese attains +7. Practical uses are minimal because of its instability; permanganate salts (MnO4–) are used instead when strong oxidation is needed under controlled conditions.
