Safety data sheet (SDS): purpose, content, and practical uses

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) describes hazards, handling, storage, emergency measures and regulatory information for chemical products, helping workers and responders manage chemical risks.

An SDS, often called a safety data sheet or historically a material safety data sheet (MSDS), is a technical document produced by manufacturers or importers to communicate the hazards and safe handling of a chemical product. Content and structure

Many countries follow a harmonized format that organizes information into standard sections. Typical topics include product identification, hazard identification, composition, first-aid measures, firefighting measures, accidental release response, handling and storage, exposure controls and personal protection, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicological and ecological information, disposal considerations, transport information, regulatory data and other relevant details.

These sections help users quickly find critical information such as the required personal protective equipment (PPE), appropriate extinguishing media, symptoms of exposure, and measures to take in case of spills or fires.

History and regulation

The SDS evolved from earlier MSDS practices and was standardized internationally through the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of classification and labeling. Adoption and exact presentation vary by jurisdiction, but the core aim is consistent: ensure that employers, workers and emergency responders have accessible, reliable hazard information.

Uses and practical importance

  • Workplace safety: employers use SDSs to train staff, select PPE and design safe procedures.
  • Emergency response: fire services and medical personnel consult SDSs during incidents to choose appropriate actions.
  • Regulatory compliance: SDSs support labeling, transport, storage and waste-management obligations.
  • Procurement and risk assessment: buyers review SDSs to evaluate hazards and incompatibilities.

Notable distinctions include the shift from the older term MSDS to SDS under GHS, and the difference between an SDS and a technical data sheet (the latter focuses on performance rather than safety). Manufacturers are generally responsible for preparing SDSs; employers must keep them available and ensure workers understand relevant sections.
