Geography and environment

Topographically, Malir includes dry riverbeds, cultivated fields and low hills in places. The Malir River and seasonal streams cross parts of the district and historically support local agriculture. Large reservoirs and protected tracts sit on its margins; notable examples associated with the district are Kirthar National Park and Hub Dam, which contribute to local biodiversity and water supply. The district often functions as a green belt between central Karachi and the more arid districts beyond the metropolitan area.
