Overview

Manabí is a coastal province on the central Pacific shore of Ecuador. Its administrative capital is Portoviejo, while Manta functions as a major commercial port and urban center. The province combines a long ocean coastline with inland valleys and tropical dry forest, and has played an important role in the country’s maritime and agricultural economy.

Geography and environment

Manabí's terrain ranges from sandy beaches, rocky headlands and mangrove estuaries to drier inland plains associated with the Tumbesian dry-forest region. Marine areas and protected sites such as Machalilla National Park and Isla de la Plata host seabirds, marine mammals and coral communities, making the province important for biodiversity and conservation.

History and cultural heritage

The province takes its name from pre-Columbian Manteño peoples who developed dense coastal settlements and maritime trade before Spanish colonization. Colonial and republican eras shaped coastal towns into fishing, shipping and agricultural centers. Manabí is also noted for traditional crafts, especially the fine handwoven straw hats of Montecristi, commonly known abroad as Panama hats.

Economy and society

Fishing and aquaculture (notably tuna and shrimp), agriculture (crops such as cacao and bananas), port activities in Manta and light manufacturing underpin the local economy. Coastal cuisine emphasizes fresh seafood dishes such as ceviche and encebollado. The province comprises multiple cantons, including Portoviejo, Manta, Montecristi, Jipijapa, Chone and Pedernales.

Tourism and notable facts

Visitors are drawn to beaches like Canoa and Bahía de Caráquez, wildlife viewing at Isla de la Plata, and cultural tourism linked to artisan workshops and local festivals. Whale-watching season brings humpback whales to offshore waters. The province suffered severe damage during a powerful earthquake in April 2016, an event that prompted extensive reconstruction and humanitarian response.
