M. H. de Young Memorial Museum

History

The museum traces its roots to an 1895 civic exhibition that evolved into a permanent museum. It was named for M. H. de Young, a prominent local newspaper publisher and civic figure who supported arts institutions in the city. Located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, the original facility endured more than a century of change, including damage during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. That event prompted planning for a replacement and modernization of the museum's facilities.

The de Young houses a broad range of works: American painting and sculpture from the 17th century to the present, art from the Americas, Africa and Oceania, textiles and costumes, and photography. A new, publicly opened building replaced the older structure in 2005.
