The bacterium was first identified after a 1976 outbreak among attendees of an American Legion convention in Philadelphia, which drew attention to building water systems as a source of severe pneumonia. A related, milder illness caused by Legionella, called Pontiac fever, produces flu‑like symptoms without pneumonia and usually resolves without specific therapy.
