In mid‑June 2012 Hoet collapsed at an airport in Hamburg, Germany after suffering a heart attack. On 23 June 2012 he was reported to have developed hypercapnia and was placed in a coma at the hospital in Soltau; he later returned to Ghent. Hoet experienced a second heart attack in January 2014 and died on 27 February 2014 at a hospital in Ghent at the age of 77.
