Jan Kowalczyk (18 December 1941 – 24 February 2020) was a Polish equestrian noted for his achievements in show jumping. Born in the village of Drogomyśl in southern Poland, he represented his country at three Olympic Games and became one of Poland's most celebrated riders after his successes at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
Sport and discipline
Show jumping is an equestrian discipline in which horse and rider jump a course of obstacles within a set time. Riders compete both individually and as national teams; scores from rounds determine placings and medals. Kowalczyk competed at the highest international level in this demanding sport, combining technical riding, timing and partnership with his mounts.
Olympic career
Kowalczyk took part in three editions of the Games. He was a member of the Polish equestrian squad at the 1968 Summer Olympics and the 1972 Summer Olympics, gaining experience on the world stage. His most notable appearance came at the 1980 Summer Olympics, where he won the individual gold medal in jumping and contributed to a team silver medal for Poland.
