Hans Gericke: German architect and urban planner (1912–2014)

Career and positions

From 1953 to 1958 he served as deputy director of the Institutes für Theorie und Geschichte der Baukunst within the Deutschen Bauakademie, a central research and policy body for architecture in the German Democratic Republic. In 1965 he was appointed chief architect of East Berlin, the capital of East Germany, a post that placed him at the centre of urban decision‑making during a period of large‑scale reconstruction and housing construction.

Design approach and influence

Gericke worked within the ideological and technical frameworks of socialist planning, balancing demands for functional housing, public infrastructure and representational urban spaces. His responsibility emphasized standards, zoning and municipal coordination rather than singular landmark commissions; his work helped shape the routines of planning practice that produced mass housing estates and civic avenues in Berlin and other GDR municipalities.

Recognition, later life and legacy

Over a long career Gericke received recognition from professional bodies and state institutions for his administrative and theoretical contributions to architecture and planning. He lived through dramatic political transformations—from the imperial era through the Weimar and Nazi periods, into the divided Germany of the Cold War and finally reunification—and is cited in studies of twentieth‑century urbanism in Germany. Gericke died on 15 February 2014 at the age of 101.
