Early life and background

Scholes was born in Melbourne, in the state of Victoria, on 7 June 1931. Before his entry to federal politics he was active in his local community and in Labor Party circles, building the local profile that helped secure preselection and election to federal parliament. Parliamentary career and speakership

At the 1967 election Scholes was elected to represent the Victorian electorate of Corio, a seat he held for more than a quarter-century. He rose through parliamentary ranks and was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1975. As Speaker he presided over the chamber during the 1975 constitutional crisis — a defining and widely discussed episode in modern Australian politics — and remained Speaker into 1976. Ministerial service and later years

When the Labor Party returned to government under Bob Hawke in 1983, Scholes joined the ministry. After leaving the ministry and then federal parliament in 1993, he was recognised with the postnominal AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) for his service to the Parliament and the community.
