Emmanuel III Delly (26 October 1927 – 8 April 2014) was a senior leader of the Chaldean Catholic community in Iraq and abroad. He is widely remembered as the Patriarch Emeritus of Babylon of the Chaldeans and a prominent Catholic figure. Delly combined pastoral responsibilities with public advocacy on behalf of Iraq's Christian minorities, working within the hierarchy of the universal Church and among displaced communities.

Names, origins and language

Delly was born in the town of Tel Keppe in northern Iraq and belonged to the Chaldean Catholic tradition, an Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with Rome. He is known in Arabic as مار عمانوئيل الثالث دلّي and in classical Syriac as ܡܪܝ ܥܡܢܘܐܝܠ ܬܠܝܬܝܐ ܕܠܝ. As an Iraqi Catholic leader he ministered in a multilingual environment where Arabic and Syriac liturgical traditions coexist.

Ecclesiastical career

Over several decades Delly advanced through clerical ranks, serving as a priest, bishop and then as the head of his Church. He became the Primate of the Chaldean Catholic Church and was later recognized with the title Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans. During his tenure he maintained relations with the Vatican and other Christian leaders and was elevated to the College of Cardinals, reflecting his role within the wider Catholic communion.

Contributions and role

Delly's leadership focused on pastoral care, interreligious dialogue and defending the rights and safety of Christians in Iraq. He worked to support parishes and schools, to coordinate relief and pastoral responses during periods of upheaval, and to preserve Chaldean liturgical and cultural heritage. His work resonated both in Iraq and among Chaldean diaspora communities across the world.
