Emmanuel Kriaras — Greek Lexicographer and Philologist

Early life and education

Kriaras was born in Piraeus, in the region of Attica. He studied classical and modern Greek language studies and became a pupil of the influential linguist Ioannis Psycharis, whose promotion of the spoken language shaped Kriaras's own commitment to vernacular Greek. This early formation guided his later philological and lexicographical work.

Academic career

For much of his professional life Kriaras taught in Thessaloniki and became Emeritus Professor at the School of Philosophy of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His scholarship combined the tools of historical linguistics with careful collection of texts in everyday registers, aiming to provide reliable records of usage across centuries.

Research and contributions

Recognized as a meticulous philologist, Kriaras devoted his career to lexicography: compiling, editing and interpreting words, meanings and usages from medieval vernacular texts through contemporary speech. He championed the ideological position of demotic Greek, arguing that dictionaries and grammars should reflect living usage rather than prescriptive forms. His published work influenced language teaching, public discourse and subsequent generations of scholars in the study of modern and medieval Greek.

Legacy

Kriaras lived to 107 and continued to be cited for his careful documentation of vocabulary and phraseology. He died in Thessaloniki in 2014.
