East Azarbaijan Province (Iran)

Geography and borders

Located in the northwestern corner of the country, East Azarbaijan physically borders neighbouring states and several Iranian provinces. To the north and northwest it meets Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. Internally it adjoins Ardabil province, the province of West Azarbaijan, and Zanjan. The varied terrain includes parts of the Zagros and lesser mountain chains and river valleys that support both dryland and irrigated farming.

Language, population and culture

The population is ethnically diverse but predominately Azerbaijani Turkic-speaking; Persian is the official language used in administration and education. The region has a long cultural history, visible in its architecture, music and handicrafts—particularly carpet weaving and metalwork—reflecting centuries of trade and local traditions. Tabriz, as a cultural hub, contains museums, bazaars and historic monuments that document the province's role in regional history.

Economy and uses

East Azarbaijan's economy combines industry, agriculture and services. The province has automotive and manufacturing plants, textile production, and traditional artisan workshops. Fertile plains and irrigated areas produce grains, fruits and nuts, while river valleys support orchards and horticulture. Cross-border trade with neighbouring countries also contributes to the economy.
