East Delhi, often referred to as Trans Yamuna, is an administrative district of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Geography and boundaries

East Delhi is bounded on the west by the Yamuna River, which separates it from central and other parts of Delhi. To the north lies the district of North East Delhi; to the east and south the district borders parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar. These relationships position East Delhi as a gateway between Delhi and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. For regional context see North East Delhi and Ghaziabad District.

Administration and subdivisions

The district is divided into three administrative subdivisions that manage local services and development: Gandhi Nagar, Preet Vihar and Shahdara. These subdivisions reflect a mix of older settlements and newer planned localities. Municipal and police jurisdictions coordinate with the district administration; for more administrative breakdowns consult subdivision resources.

Key characteristics of each subdivision include residential blocks, commercial markets and civic infrastructure. Gandhi Nagar is known for its garment wholesale trade, Preet Vihar for mixed residential and commercial growth, and Shahdara for historical neighbourhoods and local commerce. The district area is relatively compact but highly urbanised.

According to the 2001 census the population of the district was 1,448,770 and the recorded area about 64 km², giving a very high population density. These figures illustrate the intense urban concentration common to many parts of Delhi; subsequent years have seen continued growth and redevelopment, with changing housing patterns and infrastructure needs.

Transport, economy and daily life

Transport links include multiple road bridges across the Yamuna, bus routes, arterial roads and connections to the Delhi Metro network, which together support heavy commuter flows into and out of the district. Local economy blends wholesale and retail markets, small-scale manufacturing, services and informal commerce. Daily life in East Delhi reflects metropolitan pressures: demand for housing, traffic management, and public services are prominent civic concerns.

Notable distinctions of East Delhi are its role as a commercial hub for textiles and consumer goods in specific neighbourhoods, its high population density, and its strategic location adjoining Uttar Pradesh. Urban planners and residents alike focus on improving transport, sanitation and green spaces while preserving established neighbourhood identities.
