The Diocese of Karlstad (Swedish Karlstads stift) is an administrative region of the Church of Sweden. Centered on the city of Karlstad, the diocese serves congregations across a mainly rural and small-town area in west-central Sweden. Its central church and episcopal seat is the Karlstad Cathedral.

Territory and organization

The diocese covers the historical provinces of Dalsland, Närke and Värmland. Internally it is organized into parishes and deaneries that coordinate worship, social outreach and administration. A bishop, assisted by a cathedral chapter and diocesan staff, provides spiritual leadership and oversight for clergy, church buildings and parish activities.

History

Its present form dates from 1581, in the decades after the Reformation when church structures in Sweden were reorganized. While local Christian communities in the area have medieval roots, the diocese as a distinct unit developed in the early modern period and evolved with later administrative reforms, architectural rebuilding and shifting parish boundaries.

Role and significance

The diocese supports regular worship services, confirmation and pastoral care, and it plays a role in cultural heritage through conservation of historic churches and artifacts. It also participates in ecumenical contacts and local social programs, such as aid to families, elderly care initiatives and education about religious and cultural traditions.

The Diocese of Karlstad remains a key institution for religious life and heritage in its region, maintaining churches, supporting clergy and offering services that reflect both historical traditions and contemporary community needs.
