Geography and landscape

The terrain of Närke combines fertile agricultural land around the larger lakes with wooded ridges to the west. One well-known ridge is Kilsbergen, a line of hills that frames part of the province. History and development

Närke has roots stretching back to prehistoric and Viking Age settlement, later becoming an administrative and military district in medieval Sweden. Örebro Castle, still a prominent landmark, grew up as a fortress and administrative center. The older spelling "Nerike" survives in local names and institutions, including the local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda.

Örebro is the largest city and cultural center, with long-standing trade links and modern institutions such as a university and diverse businesses.
