Typical examples include choosing an investment portfolio by weighing expected returns and risk, selecting a medical treatment using probabilities of outcomes and patient utilities, or designing experiments to reduce key uncertainties before committing to costly actions.

Distinctions, limitations, and notable facts

Practical decision making often departs from the idealized assumptions of normative theory: agents may lack full information, have limited computational capacity, or face ambiguous probabilities. Descriptive findings have motivated hybrid approaches that blend normative guidance with behavioral realism. Decision theory also intersects with game theory when choices interact strategically and with statistics when the focus is on learning probabilities from data.
