Overview
A decision is the process or outcome of selecting one option from a set of alternatives. The term applies to everyday choices as well as to formal determinations such as legal judgments, administrative rulings or algorithmic outputs. Decisions can be immediate and habitual or deliberative and consequential; they are central to individual behavior, organizational management and public policy.
Key components
Most decisions involve several recognizable elements that shape how choices are framed and resolved:
- Alternatives: the possible options under consideration.
- Criteria and preferences: the goals, values or rules used to evaluate alternatives.

Behavioral research later showed that real decision-makers often depart from ideal models because of limited information, cognitive limits and systematic biases; notions such as bounded rationality and prospect theory describe these departures.

Decision support systems and data visualization help manage complexity, while techniques from psychology — such as debiasing and structured deliberation — seek to reduce predictable errors.
Ethical and social considerations
Decisions affect fairness, rights and wellbeing. Transparency, accountability and participation are often recommended, particularly for public or automated decisions that affect many people. Designing institutions and procedures that align incentives, manage information asymmetries and protect vulnerable parties is a persistent challenge in governance and technology design.
