The colon is the largest portion of the large intestine between the cecum and rectum. It absorbs water and electrolytes, hosts microbiota, forms feces, and is central to several common diseases.

Motility patterns—segmental contractions and periodic mass movements—mix contents and propel them toward the rectum. Mucus secretion eases passage, while the resident microbiota perform fermentation and interact with the immune system.

Across mammals the length and complexity of the colon vary with diet and digestive strategy. Herbivores that rely on hindgut fermentation tend to have an expanded colon for microbial breakdown of plant fiber, whereas carnivores have a shorter colon. Clinical importance
The colon is the site of common medical conditions, including inflammatory diseases (such as ulcerative colitis), diverticulosis, functional disorders like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, and neoplasms. Screening and visualization of the colon are commonly performed with colonoscopy. Management of colon conditions ranges from dietary change and medication to endoscopic procedures and surgery.
