The Coastal Range newt is the subspecies subspecies Taricha torosa torosa of the broader California newt complex. It occupies low- to mid-elevation habitats along the California Coast Ranges and into southern coastal areas including parts of the San Diego region. As an amphibian adapted to a Mediterranean climate, it balances a largely terrestrial adult life with periodic aquatic breeding.

Coastal Range newts are medium-sized, with rough, granular skin and a subdued brown to olive dorsum contrasted by a brighter yellow-orange belly. Their skin secretes tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin that deters many predators and is linked to warning coloration and defensive postures. Behaviorally they are secretive, often active at night or during wet weather, and can be found under logs, leaf litter, or rocky cover.
Life cycle and reproduction
These newts migrate to suitable ponds, slow-moving streams or seeps to breed, typically in the rainy season. Females lay eggs singly or in short strings attached to submerged vegetation or other structure; larvae are fully aquatic and undergo metamorphosis before leaving the water. The species shows site fidelity to traditional breeding sites when those remain viable.

A classic example of predator–prey coevolution involves local garter snakes, some of which have evolved resistance to tetrodotoxin, illustrating ecological interactions that can drive rapid evolutionary change.
