Early life and professional background

Stewart was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and trained as a nurse. She graduated from the University of Toronto and worked in health and community settings before entering federal politics. Her professional background in care and public service informed her later interest in environmental and community issues.

Political career and roles

Stewart won election to the House of Commons in 1988 and was re-elected through the 1990s, serving three consecutive terms as the member for Northumberland. During her time in Ottawa she held both opposition and government responsibilities and was appointed to the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada when she joined cabinet.
