Geography and administration

The territory of Cebu includes the long narrow main island plus adjacent islands such as Mactan and many smaller islets. Administratively it contains several component cities and numerous municipalities; the metropolitan area around the capital forms the economic core. Major cities include:

Spanish colonization brought new institutions and Christianity, and Cebu City is often described as one of the oldest Spanish-established cities in the country.
