A caste is a specialized morphological or behavioral group within a social animal population—common in social insects—defined by role, reproductive status and development, and shaped by environmental and social signals.

In biology, a caste describes a distinct class of individuals within a single species that perform specialized functions for a social group. Castes are most familiar from insects but can occur in other social animals. The phenomenon is central to studies of eusocial species, where many individuals live together in cooperative colonies or groups such as nests or hives. Caste differences often underlie a pronounced division of labour that increases colony efficiency.

Castes may be defined by morphology, physiology, behavior or reproductive status. Typical categories include queens (primary reproducers), workers (foraging, brood care), and soldiers (defense), but some societies show more fine-grained specialization. Castes that do not reproduce are often sterile, though reproductive flexibility exists in some groups.

Social signals from the queen or colony condition frequently influence which pathway an individual follows.

History, function and evolutionary context
