History

The institution traces its origins to a theatrical tradition established in the 18th century and rose to wide prominence in the 19th century with the completion of a purpose-built neoclassical theatre. Over the centuries the building has endured fires, repairs and alterations; a major programme of restoration and modernization in the 2000s renewed stage technology and audience facilities and the house reopened in the early 2010s with much of its historical character restored.

The theatre is noted for its striking neoclassical façade, including a broad portico with columns and a decorated pediment, and for richly ornamented foyers and a capacious auditorium. Interior design, chandeliers and stage machinery were developed to support elaborate sets and large-scale productions and to create an imposing ceremonial atmosphere for public events.

The resident companies present a repertory that ranges from canonical, full-length classical works to contemporary choreography and newly commissioned operas.
