Overview

Mike Myers (born Michael John Myers, 25 May 1963) is a Canadian-born actor, comedian, writer, producer and director. He rose to prominence on the sketch series Saturday Night Live and became widely known for creating and performing several enduring comic characters in film, television and animation. His most recognizable works include the Austin Powers film series, the film Wayne's World, and voicing the title character in the animated Shrek franchise.

Early life and background

Myers was born to English parents and grew up in Scarborough, Ontario. He began performing as a child and moved into professional comedy and television in Canada before joining a major American sketch program. He holds multiple citizenships and has lived and worked on both sides of the Atlantic, which contributed to a transnational presence in his career.

Career and major characters

Myers built a reputation for creating distinct, recurring characters—often blending parody, slapstick and affectionate pastiche. On sketch television he developed comic personae that translated to feature films. In cinema he wrote and starred in comedies that combined broad humor with deliberate retro styling, most famously the spy pastiche centered on Austin Powers and the self-referential rocker characters from Wayne's World. He has also done notable voice work in animated features.

Style, impact and reception

Myers' work frequently mixes cultural satire with character-driven jokes, employing accents, catchphrases and period pastiches. His films have achieved both commercial success and mixed critical response; some entries were praised for inventiveness while others sparked debate about comedic taste. His influence is visible in late-20th and early-21st century comedy, particularly in how sketch characters were adapted to long-form films.
