Career and method

De Wolff began his professional career in 1972. Over subsequent decades he developed a systematic approach to analyse and classify journalistic output, intending to make editorial choices more transparent and to help newsrooms improve clarity, balance and audience relevance. Rather than elegant theory alone, his work focused on tools editors could use to assess the mix of stories, angles and formats in a publication.

He advised editors and publishers across the Netherlands and Belgium, offering consultancy, workshops and written analyses. His practice bridged research and applied consultancy, aiming to translate media studies concepts into practical editorial change.

Contributions and areas of focus

  • Classification of news items and feature content to reveal patterns and gaps.
  • Editorial process improvement, including planning and content mix.
  • Audience-oriented reporting and clearer presentation of editorial aims.

De Wolff’s approach was pragmatic: tools and checklists were designed to be used within busy newsrooms and to inform decisions by editors and publishers rather than replace editorial judgement.

Life, illness and legacy

Leon de Wolff died on 3 January 2014 at age 65 in Lochem, in the province of Gelderland. The cause of death was multiple system atrophy (MSA), a progressive neurological disorder. He is remembered for his role in sharpening editorial self-awareness and for tools that continue to be cited in Dutch-language discussions of newsroom practice.

While he was primarily active in the Netherlands and Belgium, his combination of research and consultancy illustrates a broader trend in media studies: translating analysis into hands-on improvements for news organisations. His work remains a reference point for those studying how editorial choices shape the public information landscape.
