Klaus Werner Iohannis (born 13 June 1959) is a Romanian politician who has served as President of Romania since December 2014. He came to national prominence after a long tenure as mayor of his native city of Sibiu and through his role in national party politics. He is widely known for a pragmatic, managerial approach to public administration and for a pro‑European orientation during his presidency (office).
Early life and background
Iohannis was born in the city known in German as Johannis and in Romanian as Sibiu, in central Romania. He belongs to the Transylvanian Saxon community, a German‑speaking minority whose ancestors settled in parts of Transylvania during the medieval period, at a time when the region belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. The Saxon presence in the area dates back to roughly the 12th century, and that heritage has been a visible element of his public identity.
Education and early career
Trained as a teacher, Iohannis worked for many years as a physics teacher at a German‑language school in Sibiu before entering local politics. His background in education and his professional demeanor contributed to an image of reliability and administrative competence that helped him build local support.
Mayor of Sibiu (2000–2014)
Iohannis was first elected mayor of Sibiu in 2000 and was re‑elected in subsequent local contests, serving until 2014. As mayor he focused on urban renewal, restoration of historic areas, improving public services and promoting cultural events and tourism. Under his leadership the city attracted greater national and international attention for heritage conservation and event programming, developments often cited as a model of municipal administration in Romania.
Entry into national politics and the presidency
After a long municipal career, Iohannis moved to national politics. In February 2013 he joined the National Liberal Party (PNL) and became one of its vice‑presidents. He was chosen as party president in June 2014 following the resignation of Crin Antonescu. Running as the PNL candidate, he won the presidential election later that year and assumed the presidency in December 2014.
Political positions and public image
Iohannis is generally portrayed as a consensus‑seeking, moderate figure who emphasizes rule of law, administrative efficiency and European integration. His public manner is commonly described as calm and reserved. Supporters praise his managerial emphasis and commitment to anti‑corruption rhetoric; critics sometimes argue that his style can be cautious or incremental on some reforms. Throughout his time in office he has engaged with domestic political actors and European partners in the context of Romania's role in the European Union.
Personal life, identity and reception
As a member of the Transylvanian Saxon minority, Iohannis represents an ethnic German tradition within Romania and is sometimes noted for this aspect of his biography (German language and culture; Saxons). His rise from classroom teacher to long‑serving mayor and then head of state is an uncommon trajectory in contemporary Romanian politics and has shaped public discussion of leadership styles and civic renewal.
