PNL is generally described as conservative-liberal or liberal-conservative: it combines support for private enterprise, fiscal responsibility and deregulation with commitments to national institutions and stability. History and development

The original National Liberal movement played a central role in Romania's modern formation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After World War II and the communist takeover, the historic party was suppressed. A reconstituted PNL emerged after 1989 with the fall of communism and has since competed in successive democratic elections. In the early 2010s PNL entered and later left several electoral alliances: it joined the Social Liberal Union (USL) with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) until that alliance dissolved in 2014, and in mid-2014 it formed the ACL alliance with the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), a cooperation that preceded a later organizational merger between the two groups.
