Karun Chandhok (born 19 January 1984) is an Indian racing driver who has competed at multiple levels of international motorsport and since retiring from full-time driving has worked as a commentator and motorsport analyst. He was born in Chennai and is widely recognised as one of the first Indian drivers to reach Formula One, following the pioneering appearance of Narain Karthikeyan. Chandhok is most often described simply as an Indian racing driver.
Early career and rise through junior formulas
Chandhok began racing in regional and Asian single-seater championships, claiming the Formula Asia title in 2001. He continued his ascent through increasingly competitive categories and became the inaugural Formula Asia V6 by Renault champion in 2006. These early successes opened opportunities to move to Europe and contest the GP2 Series, a recognised feeder championship for drivers pursuing Formula One.
GP2 and Formula One
In GP2 Chandhok spent several seasons (the main pathway to F1 at the time) and recorded a pair of victories at that level. His performances led to a Formula One race seat in 2010, when he signed to drive for the HRT F1 Team (HRT). He raced for the squad in the early part of the season; following the British round the team announced that their driver lineup would change and that he would be replaced by Sakon Yamamoto for the German Grand Prix. That short F1 spell remains a notable milestone in his career.
Later activities and media work
After his time in Formula One Chandhok continued to be involved in international racing categories and moved into broadcast work and punditry, applying his on-track experience to technical analysis and commentary. He has been visible on television coverage and at motorsport events, helping explain strategy and car performance to viewers while also advising younger drivers and working on occasional race programs.
