Johannes Dieckmann

Role and responsibilities

As President of the People's Chamber, Dieckmann acted as the speaker of the GDR's nominal legislature. In that capacity he conducted parliamentary sessions, represented the chamber externally and signed laws passed by the assembly. Because of the constitutional structure of the early GDR, the holder of this post assumed the functions of head of state on an interim basis on two occasions: at the formation of the state in 1949 and after the death of the first president in 1960.

Dieckmann was associated with the Liberal Democratic Party of Germany (LDPD), one of several non-communist parties that participated in the GDR's National Front under the leadership of the Socialist Unity Party (SED).
