Gunpei Yokoi: Nintendo inventor and Game Boy creator

Japanese game designer and inventor (1941–1997) known for the Game Boy, the D-pad, mentoring Shigeru Miyamoto, producing Metroid, and later work on the Virtual Boy and WonderSwan.

Gunpei Yokoi (横井 軍平; September 10, 1941 – October 4, 1997) was a Japanese inventor and game-hardware designer whose work shaped portable gaming. The ordering of his name follows the Japanese name convention and his family name is noted in sources as Yokoi. He is widely credited with conceiving simple, rugged hardware and intuitive controls that made handheld play popular.

Yokoi spent most of his career at Nintendo, initially as part of the company's R&D unit. He innovated the cross-shaped directional control that led to the modern D-pad while developing the Game Boy. In addition to hardware, he supervised and produced software projects and helped bring several franchises to life, including Metroid. Colleagues remember him as a mentor and teacher to younger designers such as Shigeru Miyamoto.

As a video game designer and engineer, Yokoi emphasized using well‑understood, inexpensive components in creative ways rather than chasing the latest technology. This practical approach—often described in industry writing as lateral thinking with reliable or "withered" technology—guided his decisions on ergonomics, battery life and durability. His philosophy influenced how Nintendo balanced playability with manufacturing cost.

Not every project succeeded. The designer's Virtual Boy, an early attempt at three‑dimensional portable display, was commercially unsuccessful and criticized for ergonomics and limited software. After leaving Nintendo, Yokoi founded Koto Laboratory and continued handheld work. His final hardware concept evolved into the WonderSwan, released after his death and developed by other companies.
