Overview

Gordan Nikolitch (born 1968) is a Serbian violinist and teacher best known for his role as leader (concertmaster) of the London Symphony Orchestra. Praised for a clear, communicative style and a broad musical curiosity, he has balanced orchestral leadership with an active chamber-music profile and a commitment to both Baroque and contemporary repertoire.

Education and formative years

Nikolitch began violin studies at age seven and pursued advanced training at the Musikhochschule in Basel, Switzerland. During his early career he worked closely with prominent composers and pedagogues, which shaped his interest in new music as well as historic performance practices. He has collaborated with figures such as Witold Lutosławski and György Kurtág, experiences that informed his approach to phrasing, ensemble interaction and modern repertoire.

Career and repertoire

Throughout his career Nikolitch has moved fluidly between roles: soloist, concertmaster, chamber musician and educator. Before joining the London Symphony Orchestra he served as leader of ensembles including the Orchestre d’Auvergne and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. His repertoire ranges from Baroque works—often approached with stylistic attention to articulation and bowing—to contemporary compositions, where he is known for advocating new or lesser-known pieces. He frequently appears in chamber-music settings, championing both standard repertoire and rarer works for violin and small ensembles.

Instrument, recordings and musical priorities

Nikolitch performs on a violin made in Cremona in 1776 by Lorenzo Storioni, an instrument valued for its warm tone and responsiveness. He has an active recording catalogue that emphasizes neglected or under-recorded violin literature as well as collaborations with leading chamber groups and orchestras. His recording projects and live programming often reflect a desire to expand listeners’ exposure to music outside the standard concert rota.
