Overview
Västmanland is one of Sweden's traditional provinces (landskap), located in central Sweden. It occupies an inland position north-west of Stockholm and shares borders with several neighbouring provinces: Södermanland, Närke, Värmland, Dalarna and Uppland. The region's informal location in the middle of the country is sometimes described as middle Sweden.
Landscape and settlements
The province combines low-lying agricultural plains along the shores of Lake Mälaren with forested highlands to the north and west. Västerås is the largest city and a regional centre; other notable towns include Sala, Köping, Fagersta and Norberg. Rivers, lakes and woodland have shaped settlement patterns and transport routes for centuries.
History and name
The name Västmanland means "land of the west men," originally referring to people who lived west of the old power centre in Uppland. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and played a role in medieval Sweden. Parts of western Västmanland form the Bergslagen mineral district, historically important for iron and copper extraction; several old mines and mining communities date back many centuries.
Economy, culture and heritage
Historically dominated by mining, metalworking and forestry, the province later developed manufacturing and modern industry around its towns. Cultural heritage includes mining landscapes, manor houses, churches and folk traditions preserved in local museums. The Sala silver mine and industrial museum sites reflect the long tradition of extractive industry and its social impact.
Distinctions and administration
As with other Swedish provinces, Västmanland is a historical and cultural region rather than an administrative unit. Modern government functions are carried out by counties (län); the name survives in Västmanland County, though administrative borders do not exactly match the historical province.
