Typhoon Lekima (2019), referred to in the Philippines as Hanna, developed from a tropical depression east of the Philippines on 30 July. It was the ninth named storm of the 2019 Pacific typhoon season.
Under favourable conditions Lekima intensified to a Category 4–equivalent super typhoon. An ensuing eyewall replacement cycle weakened the system before it made landfall in Zhejiang late on 9 August as a Category 2–equivalent typhoon. The storm tracked across eastern China and made a second landfall in Shandong on 11 August.
Impact
- The storm's precursor enhanced the southwest monsoon over the Philippines, producing heavy rainfall; three boats sank and 31 people died in related incidents.
- In mainland China Lekima caused extensive damage: official reports recorded 89 deaths and economic losses of CN¥ 53.7 billion (US$ 7.6 billion).
- Smaller effects were reported in the Ryukyu Islands and in Taiwan, including coastal flooding and transport disruptions.
