History and development

Stevan Hristić founded and conducted the orchestra at its first concert on April 28, 1923. During the 20th century the ensemble grew in stature, becoming one of the most respected orchestras in the region. In the decades after World War II it expanded its repertoire and toured across Europe. Political and economic turmoil in the 1990s disrupted cultural life: international travel and exchanges were restricted, funding declined, and the orchestra lost some personnel.
