Artistic style and notable works

Khalid's work is marked by strong figurative forms, expressive gestures and an emphasis on narrative content. In 1983 he won first prize in the Second National Sculpture Exhibition organized by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, and on multiple occasions he was appointed as a juror for national-level art competitions. Parallel to his practice, Khalid served as a professor in the Sculpture Department at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, where he taught generations of students and influenced arts education in Bangladesh.

Throughout his career Khalid received formal recognition for his contributions to Bangladeshi art. In 2017 he was awarded the Ekushey Padak by the government of Bangladesh, one of the country’s highest civilian honors for contributions to culture. Institutional prizes and critical attention over many years established him as a leading figure in the field of public sculpture in Bangladesh.

Death

Syed Abdullah Khalid died on 20 May 2017 in Dhaka from complications related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 75. His passing was noted across Bangladesh’s art community, and his works remain prominent fixtures in the country’s cultural landscape.
