Starbuck Island (Volunteer Island) — uninhabited coral atoll in the central Pacific

Geography and physical features

The island is low-lying and composed chiefly of wind-blown sand, coral rubble and a surrounding reef flat. As with many atolls, it has limited or no fresh surface water and its coastline is shaped by waves, tides and occasional storm events. Starbuck sits in the central Pacific basin and is mapped among the Central Line Islands, isolated from major population centers.
