Spermicide — non-hormonal contraceptive agents

A non-hormonal substance applied to the genital tract to immobilize or kill sperm. Used alone it is less reliable than other methods; commonly combined with barrier devices and associated with local side effects.

Spermicide refers to a chemical product applied to the genital tract to immobilize or kill sperm before they reach the cervix. How spermicides work

Most spermicides act as surfactants that disrupt sperm cell membranes, reducing motility and rendering sperm unable to fertilize an egg. They are available in several delivery forms and are applied into the vagina or over a barrier device shortly before intercourse. The onset of action is rapid but duration varies with the product.

Forms and common ingredients

  • Forms: gels, foams, creams, films, suppositories and contraceptive sponges impregnated with spermicide.
  • Active agents: nonoxynol‑9 is the most widely used ingredient in many countries.
  • Availability: many spermicides are sold over the counter where regulated; formulations differ by region.

Effectiveness and typical use

When used alone, spermicides have a higher pregnancy rate than most other contraceptive methods such as hormonal pills, intrauterine devices, or implants. Their effectiveness improves when paired with barrier methods (condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps or sponges). Safety, side effects and sexually transmitted infections

Local side effects can include vaginal or penile irritation, allergic reactions, or disruption of normal vaginal flora. Spermicides do not provide reliable protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs); in fact, frequent use of surfactant spermicides has been associated with increased mucosal irritation, which may raise transmission risk for certain infections in some studies. Individuals with recurrent irritation or specific health concerns should consult a clinician before continued use.

History and practical considerations

Various substances have been used historically to inhibit sperm, but modern chemical spermicides became common in the 20th century alongside the development of barrier contraceptives.
