Basil Hansen — Australian ice hockey player (1926–2015)

Basil Hansen (7 October 1926 – 2 January 2015) was an Australian athlete known for his long-standing involvement in ice hockey. Active as a player from 1946 until 1963, Hansen is remembered as a one‑club man who combined competitive longevity with later work as a coach and mentor in the postwar development of the sport in Australia.

Hansen was born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, where ice sports maintained a modest but dedicated following. Like many Australian players of his generation, he came to the game at a time when facilities and organized competitions were limited; nevertheless he established himself at state and club level and became a familiar presence in local leagues.

Throughout his playing years Hansen represented the Monarchs, the club with which he spent his entire senior career. After retiring from active competition in 1963 he remained involved in the club scene and served as a coach for the Monarchs for two seasons. On the international stage Hansen was a member of the Australian national team that traveled to the 1960 Winter Olympics held at Squaw Valley in the United States.
