The Southern Alps form the principal mountain spine of New Zealand, extending broadly along the western side of the South Island. The range contains the country’s highest summits, numerous glaciers and a striking west–east climatic divide. Geography and major features

The Alps run roughly north–south and rise steeply from lowland coasts to jagged ridgelines. Glaciated valleys, cirques and steep scree slopes are characteristic. Prevailing westerly winds deposit heavy rain on the western flanks, producing temperate rainforest, while the eastern side lies in a rain shadow and supports drier alpine and grassland environments.

The range supports endemic plants and animals adapted to cold, wind and a short growing season, including specialized insects and the alpine parrot known as the kea.

The mountains are central to local Māori traditions; Aoraki is regarded as an important ancestor and feature in iwi histories. European sailors and explorers recorded the range in the 18th century — the name "Southern Alps" was noted by Captain James Cook in 1770 — and later surveyors, mountaineers and settlers mapped and used the region for pastoralism and transport corridors.

The Southern Alps are a major destination for mountaineering, hiking, skiing and backcountry recreation. Popular routes and national park facilities attract visitors year round, but the terrain and changeable weather make safety planning, local knowledge and appropriate equipment essential.

Conservation and contemporary issues

Large areas are protected as national parks and conservation reserves, recognised for their ecological, scenic and cultural values. Key challenges include glacier retreat linked to climate change, invasive species, habitat fragmentation at lower elevations, and balancing tourism with conservation.
