Bar (Serbian Cyrillic: Бар; Italian: Antivari; Albanian: Tivari) is a coastal town and port on the Adriatic shore in southern Montenegro. It lies near the mouth of the Bojana River and serves as an economic and transport hub for the region. In 2011 the town had a population of about 40,000 people; the wider municipality includes coastal resorts and agricultural hinterland. Geographical coordinates are commonly given as 42.10°N 19.10°E.

Characteristics and notable sites

Bar combines modern port facilities with Mediterranean landscapes—olive groves, pine-clad hills and pebble beaches. The ruins of Stari Bar (Old Bar), located a short distance inland, are a major archaeological and tourist site, with remnants of fortifications, churches and Ottoman-era structures. The town is also associated with an ancient olive tree frequently cited among Europe’s oldest living olives.

History and development

The site has a long history shaped by Illyrian and Roman presence, Byzantine and Venetian rule, centuries of Ottoman administration and later inclusion in Montenegrin state structures. Its strategic position on the Adriatic made it a contested port and a point of cultural exchange between Western and Balkan influences; many surviving monuments reflect that layered past.

Economy and transport

Bar’s economy is based on maritime trade, passenger ferries, tourism and agriculture (notably olives and citrus in the coastal belt). The Port of Bar is Montenegro’s principal seaport and has handled both cargo and ferry services connecting to Italy and other Adriatic destinations. The town is linked by road and the Belgrade–Bar railway, an important regional rail line.

Culture and importance

Bar functions as a local cultural centre with festivals, maritime traditions and a mixed linguistic heritage. Its seaside promenades and nearby resorts make it a seasonal attractor for visitors, while the Old Town and natural sites draw those interested in history and landscape. Preservation and tourism development are ongoing priorities for the municipality.
