Design and characteristics

Designed by Argentine architect César Pelli in collaboration with HKS Architects, the tower exhibits many traits of late 20th‑century postmodern skyscraper design: a tiered profile, a prominent crown that caps the summit, and a façade that mixes glass and stone materials to create a sense of solidity and vertical emphasis. The tower contains a mix of executive offices, conference facilities and mechanical floors arranged within a compact footprint that allowed for a tall structure without sprawling across several blocks.

History and development

Conceived during a period of rapid consolidation in the U.S. banking industry, the tower was built to accommodate a growing financial institution and to signal Charlotte's emergence as a national banking center. Its construction was largely driven by the bank's leadership at the time and completed in 1992. The project reshaped downtown Charlotte and became a visible symbol of the city's economic ambitions during the late 20th century.

Primarily an office tower, the Corporate Center houses executive and administrative units, client meeting spaces and support services for a major global bank.
