Roger Delgado — British actor best known as the original Master in Doctor Who

Early life and background

Delgado was born in Whitechapel, London, in 1918 to parents of continental European origin: a Belgian mother and a Spanish father. He began professional acting shortly before the Second World War, first appearing on record around 1939. Like many of his generation, he served in the armed forces during the war — rising to the rank of major — and returned to build a varied career in the performing arts.

Stage, film and television career

Across the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s Delgado worked steadily in British theatre and in supporting roles on screen. He developed a reputation for playing urbane, inscrutable or villainous characters, often using a measured voice and elegant bearing to create memorable guest turns. The Master and Doctor Who

Delgado's best-known work came when he was cast as the Master, a renegade Time Lord and the Doctor's principal antagonist, introduced in 1971. His first televised outing in the role—broadcast on the BBC—quickly made the Master an instant fan favorite. Delgado played the part across numerous serials, appearing in some 37 episodes between 1971 and 1973, opposite the Third Doctor. His performance combined charm, menace and urbane wit, and helped define the Master's personality for subsequent interpretations.
