Overview

Riom-Parsonz was a small municipality in the Surses (Sursés) area of the canton of Graubünden and part of the Swiss Confederation (Switzerland). It took its name from two settlements, Riom and Parsonz, which together formed the local administrative unit often referenced simply as Riom-Parsonz (municipality).

Geography and language

The locality lay in an alpine valley typical of eastern Switzerland and was accessible from neighbouring villages and passes. Local life reflected the bilingual character of the canton, with both Romansh and German commonly used in everyday communication and cultural life.

History and municipal change

Riom-Parsonz existed as an independent municipality until a regional consolidation took place. On 1 January 2016 the communities of Riom-Parsonz and several nearby municipalities joined together to form the larger municipality now known as Surses. Those merging included Bivio, Cunter, Marmorera, Mulegns, Salouf, Savognin, Sur and Tinizong-Rona, consolidating local administration into Surses.

Economy and culture

Like many mountain villages in Graubünden, the area combined traditional alpine activities—such as pastoral farming and forestry—with tourism. Visitors are drawn by hiking and winter recreation, while local cultural life often emphasizes Romansh traditions, festivals and architecture.

Notable facts and distinctions
