Overview
Savognin is an alpine village and former municipality located in the upper valley of the Surses region, historically part of the Albula district in the canton of Graubünden, in Switzerland. Nestled in a mountain basin, it serves as a local center for residents and visitors, combining traditional mountain life with facilities for outdoor tourism.
Geography and culture
The settlement lies amid alpine pastures and wooded slopes and functions as a base for trails, lifts and seasonal activities. The local community is part of the Romansh-speaking cultural area; the Surmiran variety of Romansh and Swiss German influences are both present in everyday life. Traditional buildings and village layouts reflect the region's mountain-adapted architecture and seasonal rhythms.
History and administration
Administratively Savognin changed in the mid-2010s. On 1 January 2016 the municipality joined with neighboring communities to form a larger local government entity. The merger brought together Savognin and several nearby localities including Bivio, Cunter, Marmorera, Mulegns, Riom-Parsonz, Salouf, Sur and Tinizong-Rona to create the new municipality of Surses. This reorganisation was part of a broader trend in Graubünden toward consolidating small communes for administrative efficiency.
Economy and tourism
Tourism is a major local activity: Savognin is recognized for family-friendly skiing in winter, and for hiking, mountain biking and alpine pastures in summer. Small businesses support hospitality, lift operations and guiding services, while agriculture and seasonal pastoralism remain part of the local economy. Visitors find a combination of modern lift infrastructure and quieter, traditional village life.
