Overview
Rheintal (German: Rhine Valley) is an administrative constituency (Wahlkreis) of the canton of St. Gallen in eastern Switzerland. The name refers to the section of the Rhine valley that the constituency occupies; the Wahlkreis serves as a regional unit for cantonal elections, statistical reporting and coordination of intercommunal services. Official cantonal information and administrative boundaries are published on the district page: Rheintal district information.
Geography and municipalities
The Wahlkreis lies along the lower Rhine corridor where lowland plains meet the lower slopes of the nearby hills. Its territory includes towns, villages and agricultural areas with close economic and transport links to neighbouring countries across the Rhine. A current list of the municipalities grouped in Rheintal is maintained at the communes list: municipalities.
History and administration
The constituency structure in St. Gallen was remodelled in the early 2000s to replace older district arrangements with modern Wahlkreise intended to streamline administration and electoral processes. Rheintal was formed to reflect shared local interests, simplify electoral districts and improve coordination of cantonal services. It is one of several constituencies forming the administrative framework of the canton of St. Gallen.
Economy and transport
Local economies in the Rheintal combine agriculture, small and medium-sized industry, and service-sector activities. The Rhine corridor supports commuting and freight movements; regional rail and major road links connect inhabitants to larger urban centres in eastern Switzerland. Cross-border commuting and trade are important features because of proximity to neighbouring regions across the Rhine.
Demographics, culture and environment
The area is characterised by diverse local communities with strong municipal identities, regional dialects and local cultural events. Land use mixes cultivated plain, built-up towns and protected natural areas along the river. Environmental management, flood protection and habitat conservation are common concerns requiring coordination between municipalities and cantonal authorities.

- Serves as an electoral and administrative unit for cantonal representation.
